Achieving this degree of excellency required a stance of constant innovation and indepth knowledge of the lands where wines are produced.

The acquisition of estates, the study of soils and the best grape varieties allowed for a self-supply policy in order to guarantee all production needs. There are 360 hectares of planted area where the best grapes are grown, ensuring exceptional quality and the finest selection of must available. The House holds a deep knowledge on winemaking, from planting in the soil to serving at the table.

The early 1980s were decisive in the strategic definition of the quality standards of Casa Ramos Pinto. José Ramos Pinto Rosas presented João Nicolau de Almeida with the challenge of studying and selecting the best grape varieties from about 70 Douro red grape varieties for winemaking.

This was the only scientific study conducted to date on Douro’s grape varieties and gave way to selecting those that best fit the Demarcated Region: Touriga Nacional, Aragonês, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão.

After realising that plantation in terraces suffered strong Douro's climate erosion, something had to change gears. The vertical vineyard came into the scene then, which consists in placing the vines parallel to the contours. This allows for better vine yield and the introduction of mechanization in a region where labour is scarce.

Investigation applied to the lifecycle of the vine.

Root stocks and scions were always placed at random, without taking into consideration the vine’s characteristics and needs. Thanks to careful observation, the House of Ramos Pinto carried out a rigorous study to find and select the best root stocks and scions for each of the grape varieties chosen. At the same time, the House continued its pioneering activity in the Douro region through its use of bench-grafted vines.

Upper Douro Irrigation Study
Progress made in Douro.

In the Douro region there are different levels of precipitation. The Upper Douro has only one third of the precipitation (<400 mm / year) of Baixo Corgo (1000 - 1200 mm / year) and about half of the precipitation of Cima Corgo (600 - 700 mm / year).

Based on these observations, Casa Ramos Pinto began to conduct a study on irrigation at Quinta de Ervamoira. The study aimed, not to increase production, but instead to preserve the quality, concentration and complexity of grapes in the Upper Douro sub-region.

The study also allowed irrigation to be authorized in this sub region, a rugged place that suffered great erosion. The result was a significant improvement in the sustainability conditions of viticulture in the Upper Douro region.

Wood and wine
A new quality standard.

Casa Ramos Pinto's ability to generate intrinsic wine knowledge over the years has been differential to the business' success. Studies conducted allowed to create and maintain excellence by improving the quality of wines produced.

Casa Ramos Pinto's latest study on wood aims at finding the best type around to use in winemaking. The goal is a perfect match between wine and wood: its type, size and provenance. At the same time, this research respectfully maintains the already defined style of great complexity and elegance of its wines.

Casa Ramos Pinto's oenological quality has always been connected to an original artistic sensibility. Adriano Ramos Pinto's legacy can be felt everywhere, in the decoration of the offices, the commissioning of works of art, the publication of careful editions or the practice of cultural patronage.

In 1997, as a tradition that lives on, Casa Ramos Pinto established the Ervamoira Site Museum to make available the collection of the Historical Archives to researchers. The Museum also supports research projects in the field of History and History of Art.

The opening of a museum area at Casa Ramos Pinto, dedicated to the company's diverse history and the advertising art produced, is yet another way to expose it to the world and share its rich heritage. Excellence now and excellence always.
